Best Job… Evah? Magic Castle is Hiring!

A little under a year ago I became a member of Hollywood’s famous Magic Castle. Obviously I don’t live in Southern California so I don’t get to go on a regular basis, but whenever I’m in LA I make an effort to get there. As a member I can also share invitations with others and am often happy to do so. I went to do that today and what do I see??

The Magic Castle is looking for a new General Manager! The announcement is behind a login on the MagicCastle.com website, but I’ve copied it below in case you’re interested:

Breakups, Bullshit and the Blogosphere

Some folks go into social hibernation when they experience a break up. Others funnel all of their free time and energy into getting the frustration out on the virtual page.

Me? I’m somewhere in between.

Yes. There was a break up. No, I won’t have a ton more time to pour all my energy into my online projects (sadly) because I let’s face it, it’s not like we were joined at the proverbial hip. We were pretty independent people who lived vastly separate lives.

But.

As with most things there’s a silver lining in this event. After a rough start to the week it looks like everything is coming up roses. I think maybe I’ll stop to smell them.

Love, Like Life, Finds A Way

I’m late to the table with my thoughts on gay marriage marriage equality passing in New York state last week but things have been crazy busy in the last ten days.

I’m on vacation this week and I’m sitting on a train speeding from London to Glasgow and I’m reminded of a quote from Jurassic Park, of all things. Jeff Goldblum’s character Dr. Ian Malcolm is discussing the Park in the context of evolution’s penchant for life to escape all barriers.  We are barely a minute out of the station and I look out the window to see plants and small trees growing out of the stone walls and Dr. Malcolm’s prophetic warning springs directly to mind. “Life finds a way.” Indeed.

Love is the same way. New York’s is merely the most recent government to realize the inevitability of marriage equality. Same sex couples the world over have found a way to make a family, with or without children, and let love rule.

You can ban marriage equality. You can imprison people for loving who they love. You can fire good soldiers for holding hands. But you cannot stop love. It endures.

Is “Faggot” the New F-Bomb?

Has “Faggot” become the new F-bomb? Remember the good old days when any garden variety profanity uttered by a public figure and caught on tape would make news? I promise you, it used to happen. It was around the same time when “fuck” was among the most shocking things you could say in mixed company.

“Faggot” has a long and storied history as one of the worst things you can say to insult a straight male. By calling into question his sexuality in this way the person who slings this insult is essentially saying “the worst thing I can imagine being is a gay man”.

Recent high-profile cases of athletes, actors and comedians throwing the F-word around have raised awareness of the damage this word can do but it’s nothing new. Jerry Lewis was unapologetic about his use of “fag” for decades. Even going so far as using it on-air during the 2007 Muscular Dystrophy Telethon:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DILmHDNJNcY&feature=youtu.be&t=21s]

He did issue an apology for that incident but he was back at it in 2008 when asked what he thought of the sport of cricket he responded with “Oh cricket is a fag’s game!

And 28 years ago when Eddie Murphy was one of the funniest men in America he set a land speed record for the number of “fag” references in the opening sequence of his debut comedy concert Delirious:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYNDVaPrTMs]

And he followed that up four years later in RAW:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Pmimdt9CTk]

I’d post an Andrew Dice Clay clip, but really? Who needs that?

But what happens when someone thinks it’s just fine and dandy to call a gay man a faggot? Over the weekend a Safeway cashier called two shoppers “faggots” to their face. Not once, but twice. To the cashier’s credit (what little is deserved) she didn’t deny it and allowed herself to be videotaped apologizing for her actions. She’s since been fired.

Here’s a little Louis C.K. to help illustrate the disconnect on f-word usage:

Lesbians Chastised For Kissing @ Twins Baseball Game

Oh the irony.

A quick peck between a lesbian couple during a Minnesota Twins game leads to an as yet unidentified male security guard telling them “I saw you kissing that girl, you can’t do that.” and “We don’t play grab ass here.”

Good thing he doesn’t work in Seattle or New York where they take their grab assin’ almost as serious as their baseball:

It’s not against the law to show affection people.

Former NY Giants Baller Says Gay Marriage = Anarchy

For real? In an interview with the National Organization for Marriage former NY Giant football player David Tyree says that “Marriage is one of those things that is the backbone of society. So if you redefine it, it changes the way we educate our children, it changes the perception of what is good, what is right, what is just.”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6lwIx9f5uk]

Um, dude? You mean like how in 1865 the US ratified the 13th Amendment and redefined who is free? Crap, that was horrible for the country! C’mon people. Don’t use arguments like this to deny equal rights – it just exposes your hypocrisy. Slavery was abolished because it was wrong and unjust. So is keeping queers from having the same rights are you have.

Just be honest. You’re a homophobic jerk. Own it.

Lesbian Cliche Song

That’s What She Said has posted their latest video. I’m afraid to say I’ll have this stuck in my head for a few more hours.

Frameline35 Kicks Off Today

San Francisco’s venerated Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, Frameline, kicks off its 35th anniversary event today. This is the sort of thing that makes me wish I lived in the City By the Bay. Then I remember that I pay less for my mortgage in Denver than I would for a closet-sized studio in the Castro and I’m happy again.

Some highlights:

I’m not sure how Kai Blackwood did it, but he clearly has read my mind. His 18 minute short Cupcake combines five of my favorite things: Film, cupcakes, lesbian, zombies and musicals. I do love a man with a flair for the odd.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tmp8esoBmOM&NR]

Hannah & the Hasbian asks the question “If your girlfriend decides she’s suddenly totally hetero, do you have to give a straight guy a toaster?” in this superbly acted feature.

Genderbusters is a short film with a pressing problem around the gender binary and public restrooms.

Gayby examines  the many paths to queer parenthood.

The shorts program Dyke Delights is sure to do just that with a selection of quickies just for the ladies.

In the category of Most Awesome Name we have Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same. The promo reel includes a couple of clips and the trailer. The clip in the stationery store gets me every time, if only because I’ve met real live lesbians who are this awkward.

If you’re in San Francisco over the next eleven days I suggest you grab some popcorn and catch a show.

Are You Proud of Pride?

Now that I’m a woman of a certain age (and when the hell did that happen, any way??) I tend to avoid Pride Celebrations as a whole. Sure, I might go to an event here or there and it’s always nice to catch a glimpse of all those phantom lesbians who only come out for this annual shindig, but it’s also a hot mess waiting to happen.

From my very first Pride celebration at Paris Dance’s Porch Party in Chicago where girls who couldn’t hold their liquor tried desperately to convince me that I was THE ONE to more recent celebrations which almost always include some form of drunk dialing or texting it seems this annual dive into debauchery brings out the worst in some of us.

Folks, there’s no shame in hookin’ up for a night, or even an afternoon – but if you’re so drunk that you’re not going to recognize your hook up the next time you run into her, you might want to go easy on the hooch.

This weekend is Pride here in Denver and there’s plenty to see and do!

Friday night with Babes Around Denver’s Big Top Party @ Tracks and with Denver’s newest Women’s bar Eden opening tonight I’m sure they’ll also have a nice crowd all weekend long.

Saturday starts off with Pridefest 2011 opening in Civic Center Park at 11a. The 3rd Annual Denver Dyke March steps off from Charlie’s at 4p, but get there by 3p for the rally. From there you girls can choose between two parties put on by HipChicksOut: BootScoot Pride Party or the Ultimate Girl Pride Party both of which are at the City Hall event center.

Sunday starts off perhaps a bit early with the 9:30a step off of the 35th Annual Denver Pride Parade from Cheesman Park. The parade route heads west on Colfax to Civic Center park before turning north on Broadway (new this year).

No matter what you decide to do, do it loud & proud but be responsible. Happy Pride!
